From December 16th 2017 to March 4th 2018: Museo Civico P.A.Garda, Ivrea
The Olivetti Historical Archives Association, in collaboration with the “P.A. Garda” Civic Museum and with the precious contribution of the “C. Nigra “, present in Ivrea an exhibition of original photographs by John Phillips that narrate the coming of the Second World War and the birth of the Italian Republic.
In 1986, the Olivetti Company dedicated to John Phillips, a great photojournalist of the last century, a wide-reaching traveling exhibition. Of these photos, the Olivetti Historical Archive Association presents today a careful selection centred on the decade from 1937 to 1946. The images, taken in Europe and throughout the world, present scenes of ordinary daily life and dramatic scenes of the war years and the period immediately after. The exhibition is enriched by the unprecedented photoshoot that Phillips did in Rome in June 1946, at the Viminale, following the referendum that decreed the birth of the Italian Republic. All the photographs on display are originals, preserved in Ivrea by the Olivetti Historical Archives Association, to which TIM and Olivetti have entrusted a documentary heritage consisting of over half a million images.
The revival of this exhibition, after its first showing at the National University Library in Turin in September 2017, intends to provide at a local level, the launch of the multi-year project to enhance the photographic funds of the Olivetti Historical Archive Association, “Cantieri Olivetti for the history of the twentieth century – Archives, photography, territory “, through an effective collaboration with the Civic Museum” P.A. Garda ” of Ivrea.
Within the framework of actions to support the candidature of Ivrea, an industrial city of the twentieth century as an UNESCO site, the Association intends to produce moments of study using multiple media and techniques that cross the entire sphere of visual disciplines, innervating the history of the factory and the social fabric, which can give back, in a variety of ways, the culture of the factory that was at the base of the model of industrial city of the twentieth century, that Ivrea embodies.
