The communication was received via the UNESCO World Heritage Centre sent to the Ambassador of Italy to UNESCO, S.E. through the UNESCO Office of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. Dr. Vincenza Lomonaco, according to whom the candidacy of “Ivrea, an industrial city of the twentieth century” has positively passed the verification of completeness carried out by the aforementioned Centre during the month of February.
This verification completes the preliminary one, carried out in September 2015.
In the light of the fact that also the candidacy of “The Venetian defence works between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries” has also passed the verification of completeness and has been indicated as a priority by the Board of Directors of the Italian National UNESCO Commission, the candidacy of Ivrea will move on to the next evaluation cycle that will start in 2017. It will be examined at the 42nd World Heritage Committee session in 2018. This decision, while postponing the final evaluation by a few months, confirms the positive work carried out in the course of the last three years and contained in the Application Dossier, It allows us to start implementing the short-term actions envisaged in the Management Plan.
The Mayor, on behalf of the City of Ivrea, expresses his gratitude to all the people who collaborated in achieving this prestigious goal that, besides bringing world attention to the social and cultural heritage of the city and the territory, represents an opportunity to look to the future and its developments, not only in the city, but also in the Metropolitan City and in the whole of the Piedmont Region.
Special thanks should be made to the Adriano Olivetti Foundation, which has strongly promoted the candidacy; to the Guelpa Foundation, which supported and accompanied the application process; the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and its territorial offices, the Piedmont Region and the Metropolitan City, who have worked and will doubtlessly continue to work so that “Ivrea, industrial city of the twentieth century” is recognized as a World Heritage.
